Notice Regarding the Passing of George Bass

GB

It is with deep regret that the Town of Hubbardston announces the passing of  community member George Bass on November 5, 2023. Mr. Bass, founder of the  organic egg producer The Country Hen, was a accomplished businessman and agricultural leader who made lasting contributions to the Town of Hubbardston.

After establishing South America's first commercial egg farm, Huevos Oro, in Bogota in 1965, Mr. Bass brought his entrepreneurial talents to Hubbardston. Here, in 1977, he established The Country Hen, the first U.S. producer of branded organic eggs. His egg box vignettes depicting New England farm life connected customers to the source of their food while setting the highest bar for humane, ethical agricultural practices.

Known locally as a champion of sustainable agriculture, Mr. Bass contributed greatly to Hubbardston's economy, culture and character through The Country Hen. He led innovations in organic livestock management and integrated sustainable resource conservation practices on the farm's pastures. All while maintaining the superior quality of The Country Hen eggs enjoyed far beyond our region.

Mr. Bass leaves behind a legacy as an exemplary businessman and community leader. His vision and principles continue to guide The Country Hen today. The Town of Hubbardston extends our deepest condolences to his family, friends and all who were inspired by this exceptional entrepreneur and steward of sustainable agriculture. A memorial service will be held June 15, 2024 at the Church of the Redeemer in Chestnut Hill, MA.
